Nelson Pounamu Kuru - Tear Drop, Greenstone, NZ Jade

This is from a dark smokey piece of Pounamu from the Nelson Region.

It is a Kuru - Tear drop.  For me it represents emotion, commonly it is said to encourage knowledge, confidence and independence...

The Kuru was traditionally worn as an earring. When made of pounamu they were highly prized and often worn by people of chiefly status. Often a kuru pounamu would be used in oratory to refer to a deceased person held in great affection – ‘Taku kuru pounamu ka makere’ (my kuru pounamu that has fallen).

The spiral lashing on this is done with special knots.  The hard part is getting it to grip the stone and not slide up to the necklace cord.

Here is the raw stone slab that it was carved from. You can see the shape of this, it is the third piece from the right.
